Saint-Ursanne et les sentiers préservés du Clos-du-Doubs

- Marguerite Richoz -

Saint-Ursanne and the protected paths of the Clos-du-Doubs valley

English translation by Naohiko Sata

The railway station of Saint Ursanne overhangs the narrow, a sort of Eden-looking forestall valley, called 'Le Clos-du-Doubs'Plot of Doubs). This Jurassian region from the epoch of the Romans, has always been kept off the large road construction sites of XIX century, and thus has kept a fantastic historical status of preservation.

From the road on the upper part of the station, a small stairs leads to ''the footpath of sculptors, a place from which we can admire the multiple sculptures cut on the tree trunks, created by local artists. Further on, upon climbing up the slope of 'Le Clos-du-Doubs' up to the crest, the way leads to the hamlet of Outremont.

Here, a panel explains the visitors the history of Outremont castle constructed during VII century, and destroyed since a long while.  Then, by crossing Pres-Genoux, we come to the farmer house of ''Sur La Croix'' (on the cross) dated 1663. From here, descending towards Saint Ursanne, a large road panel indicates ''the antique path to Clos-de-Doubs'' which was discovered in 1944, but its origin has still to be determined.  After a welcome rest at historical inns, we finally walk over 190 steps of hermitage, which takes us to our starting point,'' the path of sculptors''.

Saint-Urssane, on the railway between Delemont and Porrentruy, is situated at the bottom of deep valley where the river Doubs runs.  This Jurassian borough with not more than 800 inhabitants remained essentially agricultural. Only a single central road crosses Saint-Ursanne from its Gate of Saint Peter to Gate of Saint Paul. These beautiful gates are each crowned with a turret decorated with armorial bearings. At the gate of Saint Peter, we find the escutcheon of the town: a black bear in silver field (symbol of Saint Ursanne) holding a gold crosse (symbol of the sovereign power of the prince bishop of Basle). At the gate of Saint Paul, we find a blazon of the prince bishop of Christophe Uttenheim.

On the very top of the rocks, we can admire the ruin of a castle fortress, as well as a patrician hotel of the Staal. This borough owns a Roman church.  A visit to this admirable basilic is worthwhile. What is to be noted is its roman portal of XI century, where two statues are mounted on a small column nest: The Virgin and Saint-Urssane. These two statues represent the whole history of Bernese Jura. You will find inside a sarcophagus, where rests the remaining part of Irish hermit-monk Ursicinus.
