Having read a book with the title
"Nation dignity" by Masahiko Fujiwara

Akiko Hürlimann

Having read the book "Nation dignity", we cannot solve everything only with logic. Our society cannot be formed without considering sensibility, and consequently it's not possible to maintain earth, so I understood. He wrote human wisdom can polish up only by beauty of either nature or culture. As a mathematician, the writer clearly states that outstanding mathematicians and physicists could accomplished unique study results because they were brought up in a beautiful environment. This fact surprised me. The reason that
India became an IT nation is not that children were given computer lectures. Japanese primary schools teach the multiplication table up to 99, but Indian's let children recite the time tables "whew!" up to 19 multiple by 19 for brain training. I have wondered "Why IT in India?" That's makes more sense to think.

For that purpose,
Japan had <Soroban>! My generation was taught Soroban at primary school, and Soroban was used normally at work for some years till electronic calculators were widely used. Having a Soroban grade was an important qualification for working at the accounting and administration section. Private Soroban schools in town used to be fully occupied with young to elder students. At that time, I remember that mathematic levels of Japanese children were recognized as world top class. The fact that mathematic levels dropped may prove that a computer cannot be a training tool for children's brain. Children can learn enough about computers when they have grown up. There are plenty of things to learn for children more than computer.

I fully agree with the writer's advocacy that to learn lots of Kanji contributes to the development of brain and sentiment. The writer published also a book with the title "Homeland is the national language". Never a truer word was spoken. Everybody must feel this indeed, when they are out from home country. Nowadays, for Japanese in abroad, differences of life style are not things to get astonished, however, the high and never-ending language wall is hardly to overcome and one must struggle everyday with it. Supporting such Japanese is no question; they are proud of themselves that at least they can command Japanese freely, and they are proud and attached to the Japanese language. Even living in abroad for long time, after mastering the Japanese language, it would never happened to Japanese that they cannot be anymore sure to command Japanese. In case of such an occasion, they didn't learn Japanese properly.

Recently, an argument occured whether two foreign languages should be taught at primary schools in
Zurich or not. At the German part of Switzerland, French is not the mother language, but it is a proper official language. The argument is a typical Swiss problem that in addition to French, either widly used English should be taught too, rather than French, more useful English should be focused on. A big opposition chorus appeared at Reader's comments on newspapers. I recognized the insight of a multilingual national. The firm fact is that the mother language can be only one. They know well that one can speak in many languages means that actually, it is not possible to command any of them perfact. Of course, there can be some exceptions that one can command more than one language like his native language by making great efforts for years. The building up of his mother language is deepened through one's whole life with continuous involvement.

In
Japan, there is also such argument either give English lesson at primary schools or not. How foolhardiness it is! Japanese language comprehension levels of children have dropped down. How can they polish up their language capability without properly learning outstanding Japanese novels and Japanese language that has a long history? In my case, I was not good at Kanbun (Chinese classics), but I am interested in fables and phrases that imply a meaningful back ground. I was also not very good at Japanese classics, but now I find fascination and beautiful sounds of archaic words little by little. It was good that I learned it.

Language maturity is depending on the purpose, but you cannot easily find the border that you feel enough. People who manage well multiple languages answer with one voice. "If one can write, one can also read." "If one can read, one can also speak." But it doesn't work other way round. There are many dialects in the German part of
Switzerland, and that is quite troublesome indeed. If one can understand standard German, one can gradually understand Swiss dialect too, but the reverse cannot happen. When foreigners speak imperfect Swiss German, the tragedy waiting for him is that nobody understands him. There was a discussion that school lesson should be given in standard German. But I cannot agree with introducing such a method up to secondary education.

Now, the Japanese government prepares to amend fundamental law of education. The discussion seems to go amiss already at the initial stage. LDP and Komei Party argue whether to insert words such as "love our country" or not. That's obviously not necessary. Instead of that, they can introduce various Japanese cultures to the lessons. Each of them, such as Judo, Kendo, Kyudo, Kado (Ikebana), Sado (Tea ceremony), Shodo (Calligraphy), Kohdo (Incense burning), and etc. teaches not only techniques, but inheres spiritual training <Do (Way)> as well. Since <Manyoshu> was compiled from the late 7th century till late 8th century, many kinds of literature were created in
Japan, and the stream is still continuing up to now. In fact, according to <Wikipedia>, German speaking nations have a population of 128 millions in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland all together. Whereas the Japanese nation has a population of 127 millions. These figures are quite close. Regarding to that position, the Japanese language together with Japanese culture should be spread more all over the world, shouldn't it? Actually, many people have devoted to the Japanese education in Switzerland.

"Globalism is wrong, localism is correct" said the auther without hesitation. As he mentioned that's axiom. Including religion, if we respect local values, the whole world can build up a fundamental idea of "helping each other", and "not to invade or not to be invaded". He also brushed aside that democracy was wrong. Public opinion is certainly uncertain, chop and change, and nations demanded to decleare war that is proved by history. As you know well, the majority of the Japanese people (nation) doesn't support the political measures of the present government, but supports the cabinet. The idea is to leave the country's future up to intellectual bureaucrats, however, I cannot stop worrying to do so, because I often hear about corruption by government bureaucrats. Rather than that, polishing public opinion could be a much better solution through training aforementioned Japanese cultures.

The writer eventually suggests the revival of Bushido (chivalry). I understand his sentiment to suggest that with a sense of crisis. I agree to it as a kind of representative idea of Bushido, "If you do not act for justice, you have no brave." But I'd like to weasel out of it, because of "a spirit of sacrifice oneself for the master" still certainly exists in
Japan. That idea can cause the destruction of a family, class disruption, and social disruption. Bushido disregards women's rights that are as well a crucial point. This disturbs the formation of a well balanced society. The comparable spirit in Switzerland to Bushido is the symbol of the nation-building "William Tell spirit". This spirit has been handed down and created key words such as "direct democracy", "multilingual multi-ethnic country", "a permanent neutral country", "Red Cross" and "UN Headquarters". These are consolidated status of Switzerland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushido

I think the challenge for
Japan is, to teach modern history properly without considering taboos. Recently one of the major Swiss newspapers reported, "Switzerland was not the same now, as 50 years ago". The report showed an example of Hitler's epoch with photographs and reminded readers to reconsider their history. Now, the soil of ideology dispute between East and West is past, therefore, an environment of historical facts for reorganization must be ready to be discussed. Each nation has to have the brave to admit the historical truth. I think that blotting on the history can obstruct present and future developments. You can see in every domain of society that past failures build future success. The author described his historical view in his book "Homeland is a national language", and I got an impression that was fair and trustworthy. World top technology and efforts for mitigating environmental burdens are well recognized in the world, so the way Japan went so far, cannot have been wrong.

L’auteur a également publié un livre « Homeland is the national language ».
